1. Permanent Studios Project
We are looking for partners and 25000 SF+ space to lease or purchase in order to create PERMANENT workspace for the arts in Bushwick, Greenpoint or East Williamsburg.
Artists are so often moved out of their workspaces to make way for residential development that prices them out of their space. They are often the victims of their own success—recognizing value in neglected and under-utilized industrial spaces, buildings and neighborhoods.
Propeller seeks to create a Permanent Studio to send a message that cultural production is not simply a value to be harvested by a single property owner at the expense of the artists who created that value. Rather, cultural production is a community asset that should be protected and encouraged to remain for all to enjoy its many benefits.
The Permanent Studios Project would provide a variety of short- and long-term space options for artists to provide the maximum flexibility. There would be a mix of commercial condos (for artists ready to make that commitment), long-term leases, short-term leases, residency spaces and temporary spaces available for installations and other one-time pieces.
2. Live Work Project
We are gathering together a group of artists with whom we will purchase and develop a building for their use as a residence and workspace. The initial artists will live at a deep discount because some of the units sold will be market-rate to offset investment costs.
